Previous winners of the Eric Hoffer Award for independent books are listed below for the various prize categories. Each year a small group of entrants is isolated for the grand prize round of judging. This is known as the "short list," which is announced publicly in the spring of each award year. In 2007, individual press honors were awarded for the first time. Beginning in 2008, the Montaigne Medal was awarded; in 2009, the da Vinci Eye was awarded; and in 2012, the First Horizon Award began.
