Each year a small group of finalists is isolated for the grand prize round of judging. This is known as the "short list," which is announced publicly in the summer of each award year. In 2007, individual press honors were awarded for the first time, including a single grand prize winner. Beginning in 2008, the Montaigne Medal was awarded, and in 2009, the da Vinci Eye was awarded.
